Subject: Silver Maple

Common Name: Silver Maple, Soft Maple

Latin Name: Acer saccharinum

Family: Aceraceae

Size and Shape: Up to 90 ft, in open areas and are very upright, in light restricted conditions will stay shorter and fat. There are many different shapes they take from tall and skinny, to wide horizontal views.

Trunk and Wood: The trunk near the bottom will have peeling bark. The new growth will be smooth. The wood often rots where pruned branches were removed causing arborist involvement.

Branches: The branches grow normally up and are very smooth. They turn into a rough bark after a 5 years. The branches are light, and weak. These trees always have broken branches. These trees also seem to have a higher chance of getting included bark which means two branches grow upwards from the same spot causing weak and eventually failing limbs.

Description: The silver Maple is a beautiful tree that has red buds in the spring prior to the leaves. The tree becomes one of the larger trees in residental areas and are commonly found on road sides where the city has planted the 50 years ago. They get large and provide homes to local wildlife. The wood is fairly light for its size. These trees look really nice when pruned
